Because you lost everything, I would start by checking the battery connections and ground strap. Really the time to do this was when it was dead. As now you are right, you will always wonder when it will come back and bite you. Oil on electrical things is usually no problem since it is nonconductive and actually fights corrosion. In fact, if you do find your battery connections are dirty, after cleaning and tightening them, a smear of grease over them will help to keep them from getting corroded again.
