You do have a good thought that you may have engaged REVERSE as opposed to actually engaging the transmission. Seems to match your symptoms. Good news is that would mean it was specifically made to fit only the GL1800 and should be easier to identify. Alternatively, perhaps the OEM REVERSE switch was bypassed and that this new switch is just that.
