HI, I hope I have this posted in the correct forum or sub forum.

My GL has 150k miles, the service history is unknown.
When I decelerate, I get a very noticeable and mildly
disturbing clank or lots of slop in the drive train.
The first thing I did for trouble shooting was put
the bike on center stand and rotate the rear wheel
by hand abruptly in both directions, I could get
a noticeable 'clank' in either direction equally.
The clank sound was much louder coming from forward
of the bike toward the engine, than the final
drive.
I also I had
previously sat on the bike and moved it back and
forth in first gear and could get about 2'' + - of travel
from full forward to full backward in first gear,
engine off.
I measured that distance of travel by
having the side stand in the down position, but
not touching the ground, and noting where it
started with bike pushed full forward in gear,
and where it wound up with bike pushed full back,
its 2'' of total travel, maybe sightly more.
-----------
I took off the final drive today to inspect it
and also the drive shaft, both are
tight with no noticeable slop.
I put the drive shaft back in locked in
with the main shaft and
turned it back and forth with a long
pair of pliers, and the clank noise
was present and sounded just like
the clank that caught my attention
to start with. The bike accelerates
well, I can't feel any clutch
slippage, all gears shift as normally
as I could expect, in both directions.
Ideas? Thanks for listening.
