GL1800 (2001-2017) Information & Questions • VSS

I need to change the vehicle speed sensor on my wife's GW trike.
There's no speedometer reading.

So, I've taken off the Meter Panel, and Shelter. Quite a big job, but not terrible.

Once those big things are away, I can look down on the right side to about
where your shin would be. There I see a three pin connector for the vss.

The first thing was to see that the two halves were together, as that is
one of the failure modes. In this case, they were indeed together.

Next thing is to take out the Front Lower Fairing: #12

Next thing is to get at a part called a Protector. It sits directly over the vss, and covers three exhaust pipes as well.

In the Service Manual it shows to remove one bolt, two nuts, and rubber hooks.

EXHAUST SYSTEM
FRONT EXHAUST PIPE PROTECTOR
Perform the following procedure for both the left
and right exhaust pipe protectors.
Remove the following:
– front lower fairing (page 2-6)
– bolt, two nuts and four fiber washers
Remove the lower portion of the protector from the
studs, release the four hooks from the tabs and
remove the protector.
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

I have not been able to take the protector out.
There is a cable from left front, to right front of the bike,
which I'm guessing is to actuate the flap on the side of the
protector.

It's really tight in there, tough to see.

This cable seems to be attached to the protector, somehow.

Or, maybe something else is in there holding up the works.

Any opinions please.
