GL1800 (2001-2017) Information & Questions • Pop Quiz: Can you name that part?

Twice I have removed the cowl assembly on my 2002 Goldwing:

* the first time for its 1000-hour TTSN inspection
* last month to repair cracks in the left and right cowls

The upper two attach points for both the left and right-side headlights were pulverized to dust, after I ran over (or into) a narrow-but-deep pothole in the concrete on the I-5. The shock was also enough to launch a speaker grill into Oblivion. More on that saga in a future post.

I have come to dread reassembling the Meter Panel Visor and Windshield, for lack of clear, detailed illustrations in Honda’s GL1800 Parts Book. My mistake at 1000 hours was not labeling every single set screw, pan-head bolt, and trim clip upon removal, and identifying the location of each fastener—the first time I disassembled the cowls. I tried labelling fasteners when I removed the cowls last month, but the project was already infected with disorganization at the previous inspection. With no known means to identify the fasteners on hand, I know some or most of them are not where they belong. So what to do?

I modified illustrations from American Honda’s Service Publications, and have created a parts list of what I hope will become a master guide for me of exactly what fastener goes exactly where.

For that I must ask for the assistance of those on this forum who can help fill in the blanks, and confirm that descriptions and part numbers are correct. With this information I will order all new fasteners, and reinstall the proper hardware on my Goldwing’s Meter Panel Visor and Windshield.

I will also update and post my completed parts list here, so others can benefit from this too.

Many thanks for your help with this!

Cheers,

John
