I'm trying to debug a problem with my 2003 GL1800 trike.
Some of the controls on the left hand grip died on me; specifically, the horn button, the volume switch (won't do up OR down) and the UP tuning button. (Tune down works just fine!) All the controls on the radio itself work fine, it's just the handlebar controls giving me a problem.
I had some issues with the controls that were on the trike, and I replaced the left hand grip and wiring harness a couple of years ago with a used one, rode it to Newfoundland and back... and it was giving me the problems by the time I got back 2500 miles later. I'm wondering if I got a bad (used) control, OR if there's something else wrong, possibly that is causing the grip controls to GO bad. When I pulled the old control off, I saw that there was a bunch of electrical tape on the harness, like the previous owner's grandson (who did his electrical "work") had putzed around with it, so I _assumed_ that that was the issue... but maybe not.
I was looking at the W38 and W18 Clymer schematics for the systems, and I note that there seems to be a common line (white, going to "Audio SW - K13") for the volume and the "tune up" controls. What would be the best way to test that? Pull the connector (once I figure out which one it is) and check for continuity? Voltage? Horn appears to be completely separate, so I'll have to look at that separately, I guess.
Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated; I'm going back to Newfoundland again in July and want to take the trike this year. (I rode my Vulcan last year). Thanks.
